RESIDENTS in the NSW town of Forbes have had an anxious wait overnight, with the Lachlan River predicted to peak at 10.65 metres this morning, the maximum water level the river can hold.
About 1000 people were told to leave their properties in the area and move to evacuation centres yesterday after floodwaters inundated the town.
The State Emergency Service says Forbes has been its focus overnight.
"We've been waiting for this peak to come," an SES spokesperson said early today.
"For Forbes itself, all the areas that are going to be impacted, there are evacuation orders in place."
Residents in the nearby area of Condoblin have been placed on high alert, after an evacuation warning was issued by the SES for North Forbes Road.
The SES says it will issue an evacuation order when required.
SES efforts will then turn to the town of Narrandera, which is expected to be inundated by floodwaters today.
An evacuation order is currently in place for residents of Gillenbah on the outskirts of the town.
"Water levels are rising a bit quicker than we first thought," the SES spokesperson said.
"We expect it to inundate areas."
