Stranded men survive four days on soft drink - Ninemsn

Two builders survived four days in their bogged car on nothing but soft drink and rotten meat after they became stuck on a rural road in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Luke Audus and Solomon Love, both 19, left Normanton on Saturday morning to drive to Doomadgee, via Burketown, the Cairns Post reports.

But the pair never made it to their destination and were reported missing on Tuesday, sparking a huge search involving police and workers from local cattle stations.

Their car was spotted by a search plane around 12.30pm (AEST) yesterday, four days after they became stranded at Elizabeth Creek Crossing next to Gregory River.

Rescue co-pilot Brett Knowles said the pair told him they survived on soft drink, creek water that they strained through their clothes, and rotten meat.

"They had some meat in the esky, but the ice had melted and it was a bit rotten," Mr Knowles told the Brisbane Times.

"But they cooked up the shovel for a while to burn the paint off it, put in some oil and heaps of garlic and cooked the rotten meat," he said.

The incident prompted police to warn people against driving on backgrounds in the Gulf of Carpentaria and Cape York during the wet season.

Mount Isa police detective inspector Trevor Kidd said the incident could have ended in tragedy.

"They had very limited supplies, they had some cans of soft drink with them but I understand little else," he was quoted as saying.

Detective inspector Kidd said the builders' vehicle had become bogged after first breaking down.
