IT'S much like a scene from Kevin Costner's post-apocalyptic thriller Waterworld.
Sydneysiders are today wading through flooded streets as well as battling rushing water and floating cars - and that's just to get to the office.
The city has copped a deluge of flash flooding as a major storm cell moves over Sydney and out to sea.
And it could be about to get worse with the State Emergency Service (SES) issuing warnings for people living near the banks of the Nepean River at Menangle and the Georges River in Liverpool, fearing further flooding this afternoon.
"Low lying parklands abutting the Georges River are likely to be flooded as will be lower sections of gardens for some properties," the warning said.
"At two metres residents at Chipping North East may have water lapping gardens on the east side of Rickard Rd.
"Residents of the low lying areas near the river or major storm water drains in the Liverpool, Fairfield and Bankstown Council areas should keep an active watch on the flood waters."
Randwick City Council was forced to block off part of Holmes and Avoca streets after the wall of a shop front collapsed and damaged a vehicle.
Council staff sent structural engineers to assess the damage that was caused by what they described as a "mini hurricane".
Emergency Services personnel have been bombarded with requests for help with Fire and Rescue NSW responding to 18 road accidents, 27 reports of fallen trees and wires, and 54 flooding events today.
The NRMA have attended more than 1000 breakdowns, averaging at about 250 an hour.
The SES rescued 120 students and teachers from The Frensham School in Mittagong after they were stranded on an excursion to the Belangolo State Forest.
They were eventually trucked out using high clearance tankers by the Rural Fire Service.
